Welcome Home: Come On In To Our Home...

I LOVE LOVE LOVE visiting other people's homes.  Call me snoopy.  Call me nosey.  I love  seeing where people live and how they design their space to be a haven for their family.  It doesn't matter the size, the decor or the location, every home has a story to tell.  I moved a lot as a child and so home really was where the heart is! Today we are kicking off the series and I am giving you a little tour around our home.  In full disclosure, when I know people are stopping by I pick up so I did the same for you...if you come over unannounced, I won't promised flushed toilets, toilet seats are down, toys are picked up and a rogue pair of underwear is lying about...because we have 3 kids!  You get it!

Welcome to Our Home!

How long have you lived in your home?

We built our home nearly 4 years ago.  Actually we finished building our home.  It was 1/2 way completed when we purchased meaning we picked most of the finishes from paint color to flooring!

Why did you choose your home?

Our community is growing really fast and as a result school boundaries have changed several times. Our old neighborhood had no natural geographical fit so thus we changed schools every boundary change.  My highest priority when we bought this house was that we could see the elementary school our kids would attend.  We live just 2 blocks from school.  That being a priority, we also wanted two stories, 4 bedrooms and 3 car garage.  I also wanted a large open back for entertaining and if I were to wish big I would want a two story entry which this house had.  We looked at several houses and I walked into this house and knew it was it!

What do you love about your home?

Well besides the people inside ;), I love the heirloom pieces we have been gifted like the dresser in the foyer from my mom and dad.  Although we moved a lot growing up, that dresser sat in many of the foyers of houses I grew up in, it just feels like a part my childhood home.    We also have some rockers and kid-sized chairs from both sides of our family that our kids have been gifted over the years.  We also collect art and accessories when we travel that we like to display (like the Capri print over my office desk and Sydney print in our foyer).    With artifacts collected, I feel like our home tells our story and the pieces remind me of the sweet adventures we have had.

How does your home work for your family?

We have 3 little kids and the back of our home is very open which was a huge selling point. We love to entertain and the space can accommodate a lot of people.  On any given night you can find a basketball game in the family room, a wrestling match on the floor, or a family dinner around the table.  We also finished our basement after moving in and it serves as a great kid space.  We have family all over the place and are thankful for an extra basement bedroom that accommodate everyone.

How do your kids influence how you outfit your home?

We had a glass coffee table that lasted a little bit before I grew weary of saying "be careful" and wiping cute but incessant fingerprints.  When we got this ottoman in our family room our kids were so excited they could stand on this piece of furniture and often times it acts as a stage. I have lots and lots of baskets to accommodate toys and we also turned our front coat closet (we have one by the back door too) into a toy closet.  At the end of the day, we can have an adult space for a little bit before it all comes back out the next morning.  Nothing in our house is too precious that if it's broken I will be heartbroken.  Actually there are a few things but they are mostly UP or behind glass or doors ;).  I love leather because it's wipeable.

How has your home changed since you moved in?

We were in a time crunch when buying our house, just 45 days.  So we went with the standard lighting package and have had fun changing out light fixtures over the last few years.  My husband also built the bookshelves that flank the family room fireplace.  Of course we turned the front closet into a toy closet and finished the basement.  We haven't painted a single wall except the new walls in the basement ;).  We have painted some of our dark furniture (office shelves and dining room buffet) to match our white woodwork and lighten up the space.

What are small indulgences you love around your home?

My little splurge is on fancy hand and matching dish soap for the kitchen and bathrooms.  I alternate between J R Watkins and Mrs. Meyer's brand and I love that they sit a top a vintage scale.  I have kept that little plant alive for about a year and love fresh flowers on occasion from Aldi or Trader Joe's.

Where do you shop for your home?

I love the hunt!  I love to shop at TJ Maxx and Home Goods a lot.  You never know what treasures you will find and the prices are always so good.  I also always find things I never knew I suddenly needed at Target and Ikea.  We do shop on occasion at our local furniture stores for bigger pieces too!

What are you still on the hunt for for your home?

I am looking for a front entry rug and kitchen runner.  I had a sisal rug from Target but it was incessantly shedding and unraveling it so its now a garage runner.  I think I want neutral but then the persian rugs and geometric rugs are fun too.  Did I mention I can be indecisive when making bigger purchases????

What's still on your home to do list?

Our kids bathroom hooks were just randomly placed on a wall by the builder and so I have been dreaming of doing a board and barton look in there for a while.  We just need to decide the details.  I also am always hunting for a fun pantry light and over the bathtub light in our bathroom.  Our closet is modest in size so I would love to rework it to maximize function. We are also on the hunt for exterior lights for the garage, we just have the builder grade lights everyone on our block has right now!  Long term we want to rip out our deck and put in a large patio (like we had in our last home) to maximize our yard space.

What are some of your favorite finds for your home?

Our daughter's head board is from Goodwill for $15 and I spotted it while driving by and made my husband go immediately to get it with me!  Her dresser was in my inlaws Florida home and I asked if I could have it and repainted it.  I also have a really fun wooden bread bowl I use for fruit in the kitchen that I got for $2 at Goodwill.  Half the fun is the hunt for me!

So there you have it, the place we call home.  It's not lost on me how blessed we are to call this place our home.   We plan on raising our kids here.  These walls have seen hard days, sad days, happy day and everything in between and many memories have been cultivated within.

Our home is our haven and I am just so thankful for it.

What do you love about your home?  We will be sharing on 10 on the 10th and you should join us!  Also, I am so excited for next month when I visit my first home and take you along for the tour!

Until next time, keep on smiling and keep on keeping on!

xoxo ERIN

If you want to shop similar items from our home, I have sourced some items below!  Our interior wall colors are SW Mega Greige on the main floor and SW Anew Grey in the basement and upstairs master bedroom/bathroom.  The kids rooms are all SW Functional Gray.  Our exterior paint color is SW Anonymous with Shoji white trim.  If you have any other questions, please leave a note!
