Happy Halloween 2016...

Monday, October 31, 2016
We had a great Halloween weekend.  We started off with a trip to Daddy's work on Friday to get all sorts of treats!  Lucy was all smiles at the beginning...

By the end, she was ready to sample!  The other two were obliging in hopes they would be rewarded in sugar!

Then today, we enjoyed decorating scary gingerbread houses.  We started with one but upon closer inspection, it was a one person decorating job.  Never to fear, we whipped an extra out of graham crackers for Solon.  We have learned to hot glue the pieces together (Remember that come Christmas Gingerbread house making :)!  Grandma had fun decorating them with the kids and we used them as part of our goolish supper decor.

A Police Officer and 2 Butterfly Fairies

My parents were able to be here this year.  My mom loves to hand out the candy!  We trick or treat early here (always on October 30th), I have no idea why!

A few pictures before we took to the neighborhood.  I love our neighbors, we all chatted as we meandered the streets as our kids ran with their friends, sharing their jokes and filling their bags quite full.   No coats required this year, not always the case in the midwest, but we had beautiful weather!

Lucy was happy as a clam to ride along as her big siblings took care of grabbing her a piece at every stop.  She happily carried a piece the whole way and got to sample some when we got home.  She had the biggest smile on her face, I think she likes Halloween!

The kids finished up when their bags were full, the sunlight was gone and it grew chilly.  They were anxious to ring our bell and find Grandma at the door.  We all were anxious for our yummy traditional meal and handing out candy at our door.

We always have the same supper...the lasagna bakes while we trick or treat and is ready to serve when we get home and need a warm, yummy meal.  We got the plates on sale at Pottery Barn Kids this week and added the gingerbread houses and Vera's pumpkin candle along with lots of creepy crawly bugs...

Trick or Treat Menu
Blood and Guts (lasagna)
Mummy Fingers (garlic bread)
Vampire's Blood  (red food colored water)
Too much candy for dessert

...and then after dinner the dump and sort ensued.  The kids had a hard time deciding on what items they would have for dessert.  The rest will slowly but surely disappear before the next candy holiday (Valentine's Day????).  I have to say, they have great taste in candy so we don't mind helping take care of it :)!  It was another great year with sweet memories made.

Happy Halloween 2016!

In case you can't get enough halloween today...here's a look back at years past.

Friday Favorites: Carving Pumpkins, an Easy Kid Craft & More...

Friday, October 28, 2016

Today I am linking up with some other bloggers (AndreaErika Narci ) for Friday Favorites sharing my Friday Favorites.  If you are visiting from one of their sites, welcome.  If it's your first time here, you can read more about me here.

It's been a crazy week!

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. {2 Corinthians 12:9}

I want you always to know I am only one moment away from hot mess status, it's most certainly not perfection around here but thankfully His grace is sufficient especially in our weakness.  Amen????

Okay I have lots of fun stuff today...so let's go!

One.
Carving Pumpkins

Remember we picked them here

We had a beautiful fall day to carve and make a mess on the back deck.  Both of our big kids had very specific plans for their pumpkins.  Solon is a Michigan fan (because our Cyclones stink) and he wanted M eyebrows to show his Michigan love.  Vera wanted her pumpkin to have glasses.

Lucy was a fair weather pumpkin carver (she enjoyed opening and closing the screen door).  So, the kids and I took the drill to hers and made polka dots with different size drill bits.

I grabbed some LED candle votives at Dollar Tree, placed the candles inside and we were in jack o'lantern business.  I forgot to spray the insides with bleach to prevent rotting but there's my tip for you to create longer lasting jack o'lanterns!

I shared this week about how we share the Pumpkin Parable with our kids as we carve pumpkins.  If you want to know more, check out this post.

two.
New booties

I love my new Toms Deia booties.

Apparently, so does everyone else because they are selling out like crazy.  I got mine at Brown's Shoe Fit and if you are local, Justin will hook you up!  He even sprayed complimentary weather protectant on them for me so I could wear them right out of the box which I sure did.  I wear mine with socks like these

Oh, hey Toms Deia booties and leggings I love (detailed next)!  I got to go out with a friend for dinner last weekend and her hubby watched all 6 kids.  #saintstatus

three.
Favorite Leggings

We are all looking for good leggings because it's the new yoga pant.  A blog I follow recommended the HUE  wide band leggings here.  They are super comfy, not too thick but not too thin (you don't see undies when you bend over ;).  I don't have to hike them up all day.  I wash and dry them and have had my pair for over a year with great success.

You might remember on Wednesday I said this is my favorite outfit (basically pajamas for day).
You can find yours here.  I suggest sizing down, I normally wear medium in bottoms but I wear a small in these!  There was 1500+ reviews on Amazon and 4.5 stars so don't just take my word for it!

...and here's another shot of nearly the same outfit with the leggings (told you it's my uniform, that sweatshirt tunic was Target last year and I sized up so it covered everything ;)

four.
Angels Walking Series

Darn you Karen Kingsbury! The books don't end nice and neat so I went from book 1 to book 2 to book 3 in just over a week.

If you want to see what else is on my nightstand, check out my What's Up Wednesday post.  I have been on a major reading kick lately.  Fall scream curl up with a book and a cup of coffee...lots of coffee due to the reading and lack of sleep.  It's a vicious cycle I tell you!

five.
Easy Halloween Craft

Vera LOVES to craft (I cannot emphasize that enough).  I can't always buy the box craft kits because you know money doesn't grow on trees and did I mention we craft a lot?  So, we finished a jar of salsa the other day and I thought, hey we have a craft in the making here.

We scrubbed off the label (soak in hot water first), paint the exterior with craft paint (we used these) and then one dry she drew on a face with a sharpie marker complete with tears and a band-aid.  We popped an extra votive inside and it is a nice little decoration sitting by my sink.  You could make a ghost or mummy with white paint or get really crazy and cut tissue paper in strips and whip up some paper mache with flour and water!

It's a cute little project for your Halloween weekend.

six.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I would be remiss if I didn't mention during Breast Cancer Awareness month that my mom is a SURVIVOR!    Cancer stinks (insert stronger expletive) but our happy faces right there is because my mom is cancer-free because of early detection with a routine mammogram - ladies go get squished, it saved my mom's life!

Looking ahead to November...

What I'm Reminiscing About:

Halloween's of years gone by...it's crazy how much our kids have grown up over the years.  Oh my heart!

Halloween 2014
(I was morning sick and apparently didn't blog about it ;)

What I'm Loving:

That Scott and I have a show to watch.  We both love sitting down and watching This Is Us together. Everyone and their triplets is watching it BUT it is good.

I'm Dreading...

Next month is our routine dental exams and kids well child appointments.  I despise the dentist and despite brushing don't have the best teeth and guess who got my teeth, yes my kids.  I always want to crawl in a hole when my kid gets a cavity.  Sigh...anyway wish me luck and send a margarita stat!

I'm working on...

I'm starting to formulate Christmas lists, budgets for said lists and getting ready for our trip to Florida and the holiday season (woot woot).  I love this time of year!!!!

The last time we were in Florida...why are my sunglasses crooked? Who knows!

I'm Excited that...

We booked a cruise for our 10th wedding anniversary (belated since  I was nursing a baby).  LIKE WE ARE GOING BY OURSELVES - Just Scott and I.  Cheering, lots of cheering over here.  We are headed off to the southern caribbean mid-January to places like St. Kitts, St. Thomas, Aruba and Curacao. We haven't been away from our kids for this long since our first was born, so ever ;).  The only down side is swimsuit t-15 days after Christmas vacation - yikes!

I'm watching...

I already mentioned This is Us.  I am also working my way through Gilmore Girls on Netflix because there is not a lot on tv right now but Fixer Upper is coming back on so Scott and I will watch that together too.  I am also counting down the days until the Hallmark Christmas movies start :).

I'm reading...

I just finished this and liked it but I love Karen Kingsbury books.  This one seemed to start off slow for me but I liked it and love that its a series again.  I missed her series' after I concluded with the Baxters.  If you haven't read those, that will keep you busy for a while.  I loved them.  Start with this book.  If you need a new series read this one but I warn you each book doesn't "end", which makes you want to start the next book stat.  I am already on book 3 (and I may have checked out the large print because that was all that was available).

I loved Francine River's Redeeming Love (I would list it as my all time favorite book EVER, if you haven't read it -- you should finish reading this and then go get it!).  I loved the time period of that book so someone recommended A Bride for Keeps on a blog so I thought I would give it a try.  So far I like it, I just started...

Next up on my bedside table is Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld
(It's supposed to be a modern take on Pride and Prejudice and heard it might be closer to R-rated for full disclosure!)

Also on my long list:
Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequist.

In full disclose I go through cycles of reading, since there isn't much on TV, I am reading more.  I do take breaks from reading because when I get into a book, I may neglect sleep and other duties to read so I have to catch up on those things before starting another book!  Anyone else like that?

I'm Listening To....

I love podcasts in the car.  I subscribe to Young House Love Has a Podcast on iTunes and love listening to it as I drive my kids to their activities.  It's that random purple app you have on your phone...yep I didn't know what it was either forever.  Otherwise, we listen to a lot of christian music around here.  Throw in the occasional Carrie Underwood, Adele, Meghan Trainor, 5th Harmony, Jock Jams and Flo Rida too...eclectic, right?  Soon it will be Christmas 24-7!

I'm wearing...

FALL CLOTHES and they make me happy.  Give me all the layers I can possibly put on my body!  It's my favorite time of year to dress - no winter coat to cover up said cute outfit and again - layers.

I am not gonna lie the bottom right one is my preference all day long.  Leggings, shoreline converse, sweatshirt tunic (to cover the lady bits) and basically it's the day version of Pj's!

This weekend....

It's HALLOWEEN Weekend :) our college's homecoming game so we will tailgate, hang with family and see friends on Saturday.  On Sunday, we will play games and assemble a coveted halloween gingerbread house because Vera loves to craft with Grandma.  Mom and I are Christmas shopping on Friday (because that's when it works...).

Next month, we are Looking Forward to....

Hanging out with family in Florida

And having Scott's entire family in town for Thanksgiving...

It' been a whole year since his whole family was together last Christmas.
Scott's Grandma Olive with a tiny Lucy!
Scott and his brother Paul with their girls
Big cousin Grace with our girls
What Else is New...

I am wrapping up my first full month of blogging for more than my mom and the faithful few who read.  I have had fun adding in new posts of what I am learning from the bible to what I'm finding at my favorite stores.  You should join me next month for my link up 10 on the 10th.  We are sharing our 10 favorite toys around our house, just in time to start formulating those Santa lists.

Bonus Question -- What is your favorite Halloween picture/tradition/memory?

Notice my dad's face? He is a funny guy, my dad!  One of my favorite traditions is that my mom selects my kids costumes with them.  Then she always comes for Halloween (my dad too if it falls on a weekend).  She doesn't get kids at her house and LOVES to hand out the candy and see my kids all dressed up.  We have the same meal every year - lasagna and garlic bread.  It normally wafts out of the house and just feels warm and cozy after trick or treating.

We always trick or treat around here on the 30th (yes random I know) and kids must might tell a joke to get their candy!

My kids joke this year is this --

Why did skeleton not cross the road?  He didn't have the guts to do it!

Thanks for joining me for What's Up Wednesday - follow me on instagram and Facebook.  Leave a note, I would love to say hello!
