Solon's Eye Update...

Tuesday, May 29, 2012
We had Solon's annual eye exam for his amblyopia.  You may or may not have noticed his right eyelid droops lower than his left.  It has been this way since birth...as first time parents, we didn't find it odd at all and the doctors didn't mention his condition until he was about 6 months old.  It is hereditary but neither Scott or I have had this condition so we must have both been carriers of the gene...
Thus far, at each vist, we have had no reason for concern as his vision was perfect.  Unfortunately today when we went in, the doctor found that his left impaired eye is weakening and Solon is using his right eye for most of his vision.  Of course our hearts dropped as we were hoping that he would outgrow the condition.  In order to strengthen the weak eye, Solon will be wearing an eye patch on his good eye for 2 hours a day in the morning, this enables the weak eye to do all the work.  Solon is not excited about the patch, despite my attempt to get the really cool, fancy eye patches.  (Especially since he is scared of band-aids for some reason)  I am hoping to have him wear the patch primarily right away in the morning so he doesn't have to wear it in public all the time but I know there will be times he has to.  We go back in 6 months for a follow-up and we will be praying that his vision is equal again in both eyes and there is no need for surgery nor continued eye patching.  We do know at some point he will need cosmetic surgery to fix the muscle (tighten it up) but we are hoping if his vision improves, we will not have to do that until his teenage years.  At that point, they can do it without putting him under anesthesia.

I know this is minor in the scheme of childhood illnesses but it gives you such empathy for parents going through things with their kiddos.  As a parent you want to protect your children, keep them safe and help them to be healthy.  Thankfully, we know he is in the greatest physician's hands and we know God loves him more than we do and He will take care of Solon and his precious eye.  Until then, we will follow doctor's orders and PRAY Solon will wear the patch.  The other route is medicine that blurs his good eye and I REALLY don't want to have to go that route.   Thanks for your prayers.  We have a very, happy, healthy little boy and we love him so much!

  1. Get a pirate hat and sword and tell him he can talk like a pirate for those 2 hours (like 'arg' and 'ahoy matey') :) You could even have him 'help' you make a bird out of construction paper and feathers. Maybe that'll help make the patch a little more fun!
