A little pool party...

Friday, April 27, 2012

We were all invited to a little pool birthday party for our friends Andie and Isaac...it was at the Childserve therapy pool in Johnston and I believe the temp was about 90 degrees.  It was like stepping into a nice warm bath.  The pool has a ramp in and the depth on one side is only 2 feet so Solon could totally touch (he is standing in the picture above and Scott is sitting - ha)!  Vera enjoyed the water too - we have another water baby on our hands!  After swimming, the kids mowed down their cupcake (I am talking silence, they were all starving!) and opened gifts...what a fun way to celebrate!  Oh yeah and the benefit was some very tired little kiddos who fell asleep by 7:30PM!

Just One Moment in the business of today...

Thursday, April 26, 2012
Note from me: You know me I am a planner, I organize, I create lists, I blog once a week and have it automatically upload daily at 12 noon but today I just couldn't wait to share this little story so I am posting at 2pm about something I hadn't planned on posting because it was just too wonderful to wait and auto post later in the week....

Today while making up the aerobed in the basement for Nana and Papa, Solon, Vera and I were listening to our local christian radio station life 107.1.  We love to dance, sing and jam to music and so most of our day is filled with some sort of song...

In between songs occasionally there will be a talking segment related to a Christian topic and today's 1 minute piece was on salvation.  The man doing the piece talked about how Jesus died on the cross for our sin and wanted us to be one with him, creating a new Christ-like person within us.  To be honest, I have heard this so many times and have asked Jesus into my heart, I heard it but didn't really listen (bad I know) but someone WAS listening, a little boy who is just 2 and half was listening...and he said to me at the end of the piece, "Mommy Jesus died for us and our sin". WOW - I got all choked up....as I said "Why yes Solon, Jesus did come to die...remember Easter and how we celebrated Jesus dying on the cross, being buried and raised again for US and our sin..." to which Solon replied "yes mommy"...At that moment I shared salvation with Solon...how Jesus died for him and his sin and that one day when he was ready he could ask for forgiveness for all of it and ask Jesus into his heart.  I told him how happy he would feel being in God's kingdom and at the end he said "because mommy we would all have happy faces"....

Yes buddy we will all have happy faces the day you ask Jesus into your heart...that is my greatest prayer daily is that you know Jesus, love Him, serve Him!

So in your day to day business of this and that, remember little ears are always listening, learning and yearning for the truth...a great reminder to feed them the good stuff, make sure you are ready when the moment presents itself and praise God for the seeds He plants along the way!

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up
Deuteronomy 6:5-7

My kid the comedian...

Wednesday, April 25, 2012
Okay so I know everyone says that their kids say the "darndest" things and they have the funniest kids ever, but Solon TOTALLY loves to make people laugh, he gets that from me and so he is quite the ham these days...and when you start laughing, he will repeat what he said OVER and OVER and OVER again for effect...so cute and funny!

So the other day I gave Solon some almonds and he said "thanks mom for the big nuts" then he wanted his window down and I said no because it was too windy and he said "yeah, don't want my big nuts to fly away".  I about DIED laughing so hard!!!

We sing the song "Viva Las Vegas" but change the word Viva to Vera and when Solon sings it, it sounds like "Vera Las Begas" = HILARIOUS!

He was trying to find something the other day and couldn't and he said "oh dang it!" Hmm...wonder what mommy says?

He has also been saying things like "You are so funny daddy" and "You make me laugh" and "Don't be a silly goose!"

I might have to start doing weekly installments so I don't forget all the funny things he says and does...because they may not be funny to anyone else, but they are funny to me and I want to remember them forever!  And just because no blog post is complete without pictures of my cuties...here are a few....

The other day after we were done changing a diaper, Solon and I thought it would be funny to have her wear her pants on her head...
And now "V" has to be in on the action some all of the time...I try to tell her she is little and bitty but she thinks she is rough and tumble...
...and this my friend's is my best attempt at what Solon does any time his favorite Cars song comes on - "Real Gone" by Sheryl Crow - he "drives" around the house crashing into things just like Lightning McQueen...whenever that song is one, all Scott and I think of is Grace and Lance singing their hearts out karaoke-style (oh the Aussie memories :)!

Nice to Meet You...

Vera finally noticed Cy...and Cy gave her a sloppy kiss upon meeting!  Vera returned the love with a little hair pulling and Cy quickly retreated to the safety of our bed...

Splish splash, hooded towels, and dance parties...

Night time at our house is very serious -seriously fun that is!  Our kiddos love bath time but love post-bath even more when we let them run in their birthday suits before wrestling them into their PJ's and dancing it out with music from the ipad - generally Jump Around, the Jock Jam mix, ISU fight song, and Boogie Shoes are in the mix...We all end the night laughing and giggling and shaking our groove thing...good thing we have curtains, we might scare the neighbors!  We end the evening with some books, prayers and a rousing rendition of our night time songs sung acapella with beat boxing and wall percussion, it is quite the show....

A party in the crib...

Thursday, April 19, 2012
Solon has been loving getting into Vera's bed with her and playing...they just get to giggling and having a good ol'time...who needs toys when you have a bed?  I just love hanging out with these two, there is never a dull moment...and the things Solon says these days crack me up!  He now refers to Vera as "V" - I swear I didn't think her name could have a nickname....WRONG...but I think it super sweet!

What's with the name....

I have been thinking for months that I wanted a catchy blog title.  So many of my friends and blogs I follow do and no great blog is nameless! I have been mulling over this for a few months but we finally landed on this one "Perfectly Imperfect".  Just like us, we are imperfect sinners but to God we are perfect.  Our blog follows our daily walk, my mom musings, christian take on the world and of course our perfect (wink, wink) children....so we know it won't change much to you all but we  I feel much better that our blog has a cute little name....there you have it, I know your world has been rocked!

Spring has Sprung...

I love spring, I am not sure if I love it because winter is over or summer is on the way or just because it is spring...new life is budding, the sweet smell of flowers, warmer days, more sunshine, spring showers and thunnderstorms, getting the outdoor furniture out, eating outside, green grass, birds preparing their nests, robin's blue eggs, farmers in their field, neighbors outside, family walks in the evening, trips to the park, painted toe nails, cute little dresses for Vera and adorable pudgy toes with no need for socks :)! There is so much to love about spring...

Solon and I germinated some seeds for our new garden this year and he must have the magic touch because the package said 3 weeks and ours popped up in just 3 days!  Scott and Solon made our little square foot garden so we can plant our growing plants in their permanent home (we are planting squash, sunflowers, zinnias, lavender, basil, rosemary and we bought 2 tomato plants)
and the last sign of spring - our field next door has been fertilized, tilled and planted with corn...Solon enjoyed the several tractors driving by daily...there was a tractor of every color for each step but the final blue tractor was his favorite!

Happy Spring....what puts a spring in your step about spring?

Vera is 7 months old...

Sunday, April 15, 2012

Our little Miss is now 7 months old and is growing and learning something new every single day...this month milestone has been hard on me - one month closer to her 1st brithday than the day she was born...I am trying to relish every time I get to rock her to sleep, nurse her and snuggle her close, time seems to go too fast but I say that every month so on to what Vera is up to this month...
  • Vera went throught sleep training 101 this month and although it was taxing on all of us Vera is now sleeping through the night (you read that correctly)...She has a hiccup wake-up every now and then but she puts herself to sleep for the most part!  This is a huge step in the right direction and we are all happier about the extra sleep!
  • She is sleeping from 8:00PM-7:00AM and then takes a cat-nap for about an hour in the morning and takes a good nap in the afternoon from 1-3:30PM
  • Nurses every 3-4 hours for a total of 5 times during the day
  • She is just now switching to size 3 diapers and we go through about 4 a day
  • She can sit up all on her own but doesn't stay put long - she can get herself on to her belly in a juffy and roll anywhere she wants
  • She can turn her body 360 degrees and grabbing for everything
  • She is grabbing for all things non-baby - baby-proofing is in order!
  • She tried baby num-num's but was not a fan
  • She likes sweet potatoes, prunes, applesauce, carrots, green beans, bananas, and oatmeal but not a fan of peaches or peas and will gag over and over if we try!
  • She eats prunes once a day to keep her intestines happy - we are also trying cucumber (after a tip from the acupuncturist) to help her moisture issues!! :)
  • She loves her toys but prefers Solon's
  • She loves to jump in her jumparoo
  • Still loves to be held and only likes to play on her own for short stints
  • Does not love to be in her car seat when not movingand almost ready to sit in the cart - then I don't know how I will shop (I just figured the way I do it now recently :) - ah!)
  • Loves to read books with Solon and go to storytime
  • Thinks Solon is the funniest thing ever
  • She is ticklish now
  • Loves her toes and takes socks off all the time
  • In mostly 6 month clothes but wearing a few 9 month outfits (mostly because they are wintery and want to get some use out of them!)
  • Slept through the night for the 1st time on a road trip in a pak n'play at Easter - wahoo!
  • Still keeps her headbands on her head most of the time
  • Goes to the church nursery regularly now but stays with mom at bible study!
  • She finally noticed our dog Cy and got some licks the othe day
  • Has been throwing a fit every time I leave her at the gym, the other day she wouldn't quit until I showed up and then stopped and smiled...can I say stinker?  She is a MAMA's girl
  • Threw her first temper tantrum when I took something away from her the other day - WOW!
We love our little lady.  She is definitely developing an opinion about life but is happy, smiley and bubbly 95% of the time unless she is hungry, tired or missing mama!  We are so blessed to have her and love her more than she will ever know!  Happy 7 months baby girl - let's slow this next 5 months down you are growing up TOOOOO fast!

The Easter Bunny found us on his hop-athon around the world...
Waiting to see the baskets and find the eggs...
Nana and Papa got the kiddos something too...Vera got a little musical picnice basket!  She loves to open the flap to hear the music!

And then it was egg hunting time...and Solon caught the hang of it quickly!

He, of course, had plenty of adult help!  After egg hunting and checking out all of his basket goodies (including the much anticipated bubble machine!) we had breakfast before getting ready for church!

Let's Go Fly a Kite...

Friday, April 13, 2012

How come the simplest things can be the most entertaining...Solon let go and I had to chase it, then we nearly hit a car, Scott's kite nearly hit me, we had some near tanglage, one fix-it with packing tape and lots and lots of laughs and running around!  Nana and Papa have the perfect open field so atleast we didn't get any tangled in a tree!  We did realize why you pay a "bit" more for a nicer quality kite!  The Easter bunny also brought Solon his very own kite a red "Angry Bird" so we will have to try it out soon :)

Let's go fly a kite, up to the highest height, let's go fly a kite!"

Coloring Eggs...

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

(I hesitated to put this picture on the blog but in full disclosure I did - I was NOT showered or dressed unlike everyone else :)!  Oh well it was a holiday right????

What Easter is complete without dying your hands all shades of the rainbow in an effort to get the most beauitul egg.  We even tryed a pinterest project and use rubberbands to get a different effect.  My sister got extra crafty and used newspaper letters to put on the egg to spell "Easter"...always uping the game in the egg department!  Solon enjoyed it thoroughly!  In true Port tradition, we ate these on Easter morning and just like I did the first year, Ellen said "what??".  We never ate our dyed eggs growing up....but they were tasty and the rest got made into deviled eggs - yummy!

Sisters
Brother and Sister

Auntie Ellen and Vera

We had a great time celebrating Easter with Scott's parents, Grandma, and my sister Ellen.  More to come on all the festivities but no Easter is complete without a little photo shoot...

Happy Easter - He has risen...

Sunday, April 8, 2012
It's Easter and it is always filled with lots of candy, family, coloring eggs, egg hunts and the bunny bringing little treats(and we do all those really fun and memorable things :) but I am most thankful for the resurrection today!  Many of you know the story layed out in the bible.  This year we took time to celebrate Jesus for 12 nights with a set of "resurrection eggs".  I highly recommend them if you are looking to share with your children the meaning of Jesus's death, burial and resurrection!  Each night there is a prop inside of 1 of 12 eggs telling the story as well as accompanying scripture from Matthew.  I learned something new along the way as well!  A great reminder of the immense pain Jesus went through to pay the penalty of my sin.  He was sinless yet he died so that no man would have to be separated from God.  If you understand you are a sinner, repent of that sin and ask Jesus into your heart, you can be in heaven with Him forever - what an outstanding, priceless, precious gift.  No act of service is great enough to "earn" his love.  He gives it to us freely, we just have to accept it.

My favorite story of the cross is of the sinner next to Jesus dying along side him.  He realizes Jesus is blameless and yet dying.  He realizes Jesus is the Messiah and repents and asks Jesus to "remember" him and Jesus promises him he will be in "paradise with him today"!  I love this story because it is never too late or your sin is never too big to be forgiven!

I will leave you with this....

Living He loved me
Dying He saved me
Buried He carried my sin far away
Rising He justified, freely forever
And one day He's coming
Oh Glorious Day!
Oh Glorious Day!
~Casting Crowns (Christian Band)

May you find the blessed assurance of everlasting life by our one and only Savior this Easter!

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.
John 11:25-26

Vera's 6 Month Photo Preview...

Sunday, April 1, 2012

I am so excited how well Vera's 6 month photo session turned out.  We met our AMAZING, sweet, patient and wonderful photographer at the Des Moines Botancial Center and these are the preview pictures she sent....I can't wait to see the rest!  Just thought I would share - our little bug is growing up too fast but she is so stinkin' cute that I can't be sad!  Oh and picking out outfits for her is so much fun - I got the "V" outfit made with matching headband and the bottom is from Baby Gap and had the headband made to match - Don't worry I am a bargain shopper, I got the Baby Gap dress for $10 on clearance after Christmas (perfect for Easter :)!
